Understanding Hemoglobin A1C: What It Tells You About Your Health
The hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) test is a key tool for understanding how well your body manages blood sugar over time. Whether you’re monitoring diabetes or assessing your risk for it, this simple blood test provides valuable insights into your overall health.
What is Hemoglobin A1C?
Hemoglobin A1C measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that is coated with sugar (glycated). Because red blood cells live about three months, the test reflects your average blood sugar levels during that time.
What Do the Numbers Mean?
Below 5.7%: Normal
5.7% to 6.4%: Prediabetes (higher risk of developing diabetes)
6.5% or higher: Diabetes
For individuals with diabetes, your provider may set a target A1C (often below 7%) to help reduce the risk of complications like heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve problems.
Why is A1C Important?
Unlike a single blood sugar reading, which can vary throughout the day, A1C provides a broader picture of blood sugar control. It helps:
Diagnose diabetes or prediabetes.
Monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
Assess your risk for complications over time.
How Can You Lower Your A1C?
Eat a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and vegetables.
Stay active with regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity.
Monitor blood sugar levels and follow your provider’s advice on medications or insulin.
Stay consistent with your diabetes care plan and attend regular check-ups.
When Should You Get Tested?
For most people, the A1C test is done every 3–6 months, depending on your risk factors or how well your diabetes is controlled.
